Ode to Boca 001 | Downtown Library

In April 2025, Free Plastic had the chance to help the City of Boca Raton kick off their centennial celebrations with a new Ode to Boca installation at the Downtown Library.

Beams of Sunshine is our first installation in Boca, and as Melody Santiago Cummings, Executive Director of O, Miami, beautifully stated about this expansion out of Miami:

“We believe that everyone deserves the chance to tell their own story, and to see that story reflected in the places they live, work, and play. That belief is what drives our work in Civic Publishing, a practice where we collect poetry from local residents and publish it back into public space — into parks, sidewalks, libraries, schools, and through unexpected objects and experiences. We treat the city itself as the book.

“And today we’re adding a very special page in that book: unveiling a new poetic public artwork outside of Miami-Dade County. This moment represents more than just a milestone for O, Miami — it’s a symbol of the deepening creative connection across our region. More and more, we prove are not just Miami, not just Boca, not just Broward or Palm Beach — we are one South Florida metropolis, united by stories, culture, and a shared commitment to community.

“And what better place to do this in – than in Boca Raton, a growing community — boldly expanding its Art in Public Places initiative in beautiful ways. We are proud to be part of that momentum.”
